Typeahead Accessibility Overview
Typeahead keeps focus in the input while moving an active suggestion. Selection and chip behavior depend on configuration.
Keyboard interaction
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Up / Down | Move the active suggestion. |
| Home / End | Move to the first/last result while the popup is open. |
| Enter | Select the active result, or the first visible result. |
| Escape | Close the popup. |
| Tab | Select an active suggestion when the popup is open. In chips + multiSelect mode, updateOnTab consumes Tab to add a token. |
In your application
- Provide a visible field label and verify the internal input has an accessible name. A placeholder alone is not a label.
- Prefer updateOnTab=false when users need ordinary Tab navigation through a form.
- Keep custom suggestion templates concise and avoid nested interactive controls.
Keep focus indicators visible, check contrast with your theme, and test at browser zoom. Try the component examples using only a keyboard.
Current limitations
- A dedicated internal-input labeling API is not yet available. Virtual result position/count announcements and multi-select focus behavior need further work.
- Multi-select, chips and virtual results need separate assistive-technology checks.

Compare your workflow with the W3C authoring pattern. The pattern describes the target interaction, not a guarantee of current component support.
